Our Programs

Created and Designed for Community Colleges
TDC Members have exclusive opportunities to participate in national initiatives creating an interconnected web of students, campuses, and communities committed to democracy. To this end, TDC presents a series of Special Initiatives designed to promote national projects that will allow students to become deeply involved in substantive citizenship issues. This effort, a blend of national and campus-centered activities, entails a series of initiatives and projects that are supported by groups of campuses and national partners creating materials and ideas for community colleges to use in promoting civic learning and democracy engagement among campuses. Each initiative deals with critical national dialogues and issues such as political engagement, inequality, deliberative democracy, community conversations, civic agency, and civic curriculum development.
“A More Perfect Community”

TDC’s civic and community engagement programs were created to advance our commitment to inspire community colleges students to make a difference in the civic life of our communities.

Civic Institutes, Summits, and Workshops

Through institutes, regional summits, workshops, and national meetings, the Civic Leadership Academy provides our members with professional opportunities to develop skills in civic learning and democratic engagement and to learn from others across the country exchanging ideas on best practices to advance this work.

Civic Leadership Academy

TDC’s civic and democratic learning programs assist in the development of the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make a difference.

Community Change Studies Development

In this project Institutions develop community change and leadership development curriculum for community college students.  Outcomes include civic and community engagement courses, certificate programs, and degree programs.

Community Political Engagement Project

TDC’s political and democratic engagement programs are designed to advance democracy through political institutions, organizations and activities.

Higher Education Civic Outcomes Study

In collaboration with the Center for the Study of Community Colleges, member institutions will administer a survey to assess community college students’ civic agency, behavior, and knowledge after at least one year of attendance at a TDC member institution. Results can guide institutional civic efforts.

Public Deliberation

TDC’s public deliberation programs advance the idea of deliberative democracy as an approach to politics and civic engagement in which citizens, not just experts or politicians, are deeply involved in community problem solving and public decision making.

The Democracy Commitment Journal

This academic, peer-reviewed, open-access journal, published online quarterly and available through the TDC website, will solicit and accept submissions from educators, public intellectuals, students, artists, and community partners.
