The Democracy Commitment
is proud to be an official partner of
Street Law, Inc.
Street Law is practical law- the law you need to know in your everyday life on the streets and in the communities where you live. The Street Law organization has developed educational programs that teach people about law, democracy and human rights throughout the U.S. and around the world. The organization’s web site explains its mission and work – www.streetlaw.org.
The Street Law program is an outgrowth of an innovative clinical program at Georgetown Law Center in which upper division law students teach engaging law and public policy lessons in District of Columbia high schools. This program is celebrating its 40th birthday this year!
As part of its 40th birthday celebration, Street Law is helping start law-based civics courses in community colleges. McGraw-Hill and Street Law have published a textbook with web support for the new courses. The credit-bearing, transferable courses are being piloted during the 2011-2012 year in Massachusetts, Illinois, Tennessee, Maryland, Vermont, and the District of Columbia. Some of the sites have also established community based, experiential learning activities that complement classroom learning. New programs are anticipated in 2012-02013 in California, Texas, Florida and elsewhere.
Street Law is enthusiastically partnering with The Democracy Commitment nationally. Street Law is promoting TDC at its pilot sites and TDC is sharing information about this new course with its member community colleges.
