MiramarMarch 18th to 20th marked a very important experiment at San Diego Miramar College. It was the first time that multiple consecutive days were devoted to the important subject of Democracy. A variety of events took place. Serious films on Women’s suffrage such as Iron Jawed with Hillary Swank and a comedy entitled Election with Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon were provided to students. Free popcorn is always nice. The main focus of the week was to increase engagement; and a very spirited led students in a free speech activity highlighting the importance if this constitutional right. Information was also gathered by a faculty and staff team regarding what activities would like to see in the future to expand their exposure on the topic of democracy. Lately students raised their hand for democracy by outlining their hand and choosing one or two works about what democracy means to them.

All in all it was a great starting point and wonderful to support student engagement regarding democracy.
