On January 27, Guttman Community College hosted in partnership with New York Campus Compact Community Engagement Institute for Two-Year Colleges, a one-day community engagement institute for two year colleges. Over 60 attendees from community colleges and non-profit organizations learned practical approaches to promoting and measuring the effectiveness of service-learning for students.
Civic engagement scholar Dr. Robert Franco, Professor of Anthropology and Director of Institutional Effectiveness at Kappi’olani Community College, University of Hawaii, led the workshop. He explained how a new ecology of learning can enhance student civic engagement, retention and graduation through the creation of more community-linked curricular and co-curricular activities. Participants explored ways to assess service-learning and civic engagement initiatives more effectively and how to contextualize civic engagement activities within the mission of higher education and the professorate of community colleges.

About Robert Franco, Ph.D.:
Dr. Franco has been a Senior Faculty Fellow for Community Colleges at Campus Compact since 1995. He has been provided training, technical assistance and research dissemination in 5 to 10 states per year (40 states in all). In this capacity, he also assisted in the development of the Carnegie Foundation’s Classification of Community-Engagement. Kapi’olani was Carnegie classified as Community Engaged in 2006. He provides community college, university, and conference audiences with research-based training designed to improve student engagement, learning, degree completion, and transfer through service-learning, undergraduate research, industry internships, and authentic partnerships.
